Mental Health & Substance Abuse Disrupts Entire Families.

Family caregivers of loved ones with mental health or addiction issues often carry the weight of the role very differently. As they help their family member or loved one navigate complex mental health challenges, they find themselves stressed, stigmatized, and challenged to find good care. CAN’s Families, Addiction & Mental Health Network (FAM) is here to help.

The challenges families face are distinct and profound.

Who We Are

Families, Addiction & Mental Health Network (FAM)

Families, Addiction & Mental Health Network (FAM) realizes that amidst our current mental health and addiction epidemic, family caregivers need specialized support and resources. The challenges they face are distinct and profound, often overlapping with the criminal justice system, navigating different health insurance and HIPAA challenges, fighting stigma within the healthcare system itself, and struggling with added financial uncertainty.

In addition, family caregivers are often exhausted by the emotional toll of trying to support a loved one in a cycle of pain and in a heightened state of conflict. When a loved one has substance use disorder (SUD) or mental health issues, families often face added conflict, violence, anger and other domestic issues in the family and home. The added emotional toll includes shame, depression, and guilt weighing heavily on the family unit – and can create a family cycle.

CAN’s Families, Addiction & Mental Health Network (FAM) will connect caregivers with tailored tools and news to help navigate the complex mental health care landscape and advocate for their loved ones, and take care of their own health. FAM will provide educational articles, webinars, training, and other resources with lessons from fellow caregivers, healthcare professionals, social workers and others. In addition, FAM will create, educate, and advocate for policies and programs that help families with mental health issues.
